2010-2011 Questions and Answers: The youth basketball program in Madison is experiencing significant growth. The Madison Youth Basketball Association (MYBA) sponsor’s the youth travel program. This season MYBA will potentially sponsor twelve (12) teams who will compete at a high level versus other Connecticut towns. We have provided this Q & A document for your reference. We hope it provides additional insight in to MYBA and the upcoming basketball season.
What’s involved in playing on a MYBA Travel Team? If selected for one of the travel teams, players are required to attend a minimum of one practice a week. Depending on space availability and the Coaches approach, some teams will require more than one practice a week. This will be determined by mid-October. MYBA Boys and Girls Travel Teams will play as many as 25-35 games (includes season ending tournaments) during the season. Practice will begin in mid October and will end in late March. Games will commence in early November and the season will end in late March.
How many travel teams will MYBA have this season? The Madison Youth Basketball Association will potentially sponsor twelve (12) travel teams in the 2010-2011 season. It is likely that all teams will compete in the Southern Regional Basketball League (Shoreline League) during this season.
Who is our competition? MYBA is a member of the Southern Regional Basketball League (Shoreline League). Towns within this league are from East Haven, Branford, Guilford, Clinton, West Haven, Old Saybrook, and others. MYBA has also been involved on a Saturday-only basis with the Fairfield County Basketball League (FCBL). This was undertaken on a trial basis last year and proved to be a good competitive league for our stronger teams. It is also a good way to solidify the friendly schedule, outside of normal Shoreline league play. Most MYBA Travel Teams also enter basketball tournaments that are hosted at various locations. MYBA absorbs the entry fees for some tournament play (typically one tournament per team). Entry into other leagues, as well as participation in tournaments is an option decided by each individual team. All home games will be played at one of the Madison public school sites.
What will it cost me to play on a Travel Team? The fee to play for each player is expected to approximate $225.00 during the 2010-2011 season. This money helps to offset expenses such as gymnasium rental, officials, insurance, equipment and tournament fees. Travel Program costs in other towns range from $225.00 to $300.00 per player. Players will be also required to purchase a uniform. The uniform cost will be approximately $75.00. Your support of the MYBA fund raising is critical to our ability to keep fees low. Please contact Mark Evans (421-3698) or Brian Flaherty if you are interested in contributing to the Madison Youth Basketball Association as a sponsor.
Do I have to play on a town recreation team too? If you are selected for a MYBA Travel Team you will not be allowed to participate in the Madison Beach & Recreation program. Please note: If you are not selected for a MYBA Travel Team and want to play on a town recreation team you will need to register with Madison Beach & Recreation in line with their published time lines and pay the appropriate fees.
Am I good enough to tryout for a Travel Team? Yes, as long as you work hard, have the right attitude, and are willing to commit to the program and your team. The basketball experience you bring to the tryout is a plus, but, in the case of the 4th grade boys and 5th grade girls MYBA recognizes that players in these groups are just getting started with competitive basketball. Most important for all player candidates is a passion for the game, a willingness to learn, listen, and respect others and to work hard. Participating on a MYBA Travel Team is a significant commitment, be sure you are willing to make the commitment.
As noted above if you are not selected for a MYBA Travel Team, you are still eligible to play on a recreation team provided you have registered and paid the fees in accordance with the Madison Beach and Recreation Department program. MYBA is excited to offer you the opportunity to play competitive basketball with members of your grade level. Each team will have ten to fifteen players, with most teams carrying twelve or less. Start practicing your dribbling, passing, shooting and defense. Come ready to work hard and hustle. You will need to wear gym clothes and sneakers to the tryout; if you have a shirt with a number on it, please wear it to the tryout. Do not bring your own basketball. Balls will be provided for the tryout. Be sure to return the registration and release form by September 25, 2010. You cannot tryout unless the form is returned. Good Luck and have fun!
